Sleep Surgery

Our Sleep Surgery program for the surgical treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and other sleep related issues was established in 2013 by Jonathan Pomerantz, MD.

We are a multi-disciplinary team that specializes in the surgical and non-surgical approach to sleep disorders.  We work in conjunction with the NorthShore Sleep Center to establish a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Conditions Treated Through Sleep Surgery

Our Sleep Surgery program specializes in surgical and non-surgical treatments for sleep disorders such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) - A condition causing individuals to briefly stop breathing during sleep due to airway obstruction.
  • Snoring - During which an obstruction of air into the lungs causes the soft tissue of the palate to vibrate. This is a very common condition and may not need medical attention.
  • Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) - Refers to upper-airway obstruction within sleep, and may include OSA and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
  • Upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) - A reduction in the upper airway during sleep, leading to a variety of issues, including poor sleep and groggy mornings or even whole days.

While there are a variety of surgeries for these conditions, the basic premise is often to widen the airway, reducing the risk of collapsed obstructive airways while sleeping.

Inspired Therapy Surgery

NorthShore was the first in Illinois to perform the state-of-the-art Inspire Therapy Surgery. Some of the most common surgeries performed include minimally invasive and advance surgical techniques such as:

  • Drug Induced Sedated Endoscopy (DISE)
  • Tonsillectomy
  • Throat surgery including (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty/UP3 and newer modified techniques)
  • Inspire (upper airway stimulation surgery)
  • Pillar implants
  • Uvuloplasty/Snoreplasty
  • Nasal Surgery
  • Tongue base and lingual tonsil surgery
  • Hyoid Suspension

Conditions and Considerations for Surgery

Surgery is not always the appropriate course of treatment for any condition. In addition to the condition itself, our specialists will evaluate, consider and discuss various factors to help determine whether surgery should be pursued and, if so, which surgery may be best for the patient and their specific condition.

Some factors to consider include:

  • Type of condition
  • Severity of condition
  • Individual anatomy
  • Age of patient
  • Health of patient

Custom Snoring and Sleep Apnea Appliances

A common non-surgical treatment that we offer is the creating and fitting of custom oral appliances. We work closely with our community of dentists that are board certified in sleep dentistry for the custom fitting of oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea and oral surgery when necessary.
