What is Head and Neck Cancer?

Head and neck cancer refers to cancers originating in that region. Within this area, head and neck cancers may occur within the following:

  • Mouth/oral cancer (particularly salivary glands but also including lip and tongue cancers)
  • Nasal or paranasal cancer
  • Larynx (the voice box)
  • Pharynx or the throat
Specialization includes:

  • Carcinomas of upper aero-digestive tract (oral, pharynx, larynx)
  • Benign and malignant thyroid neoplasm
  • Salivary gland carcinomas
  • Melanoma/Merkel Cell carcinomas of the head and neck
  • Transoral robotic surgery
  • Free flap reconstruction of head and neck defects

How are Cancers of the Head and Neck Diagnosed?

Like most cancers, routine physical examinations can help detect masses as early as possible. For head and neck cancers, this includes regular preventive physical examinations from your primary care physician as well as regular oral examinations by a dentist.

If a mass is detected or suspected, it may be examined further using imaging (CT, MRI or PET/CT), endoscopy and/or biopsy to provide a complete and definitive diagnosis.

What Types of Cancers Occur in the Head and Neck?

Benign or malignant cancers in the head and the neck take many forms, but may include:

  • Carcinomas of upper aero-digestive tract (oral, pharynx, larynx)
  • Benign and malignant thyroid neoplasm
  • Salivary gland carcinomas
  • Melanoma/Merkel Cell carcinomas of the head and neck

How are Head and Neck Cancers Treated?

Cancers of the head and neck are treated using a combination of surgery (including transoral robotic surgery and free flap reconstruction), radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The use of these methodologies is determined based on the type, location and stage of the cancer.

What Risk Factors May Contribute to Head and Neck Cancers?

Lifestyle habits that may contribute to an increased risk of head and neck cancers include:

  • Alcohol use
  • Tobacco use
  • HPV
To aid in the prevention and early detection of these cancers, it is recommended to limit exposure to alcohol, stop tobacco use, be vaccinated against HPV and undergo regular screenings with your primary care physician and dentist.
