Sports Medicine

Consulting with a sports medicine physician may provide you relief through prescribed non-surgical orthopedic intervention.

Ultrasound-Guided Injections

Pain-relieving injections can be a necessary and extremely useful tool in assisting individuals struggling with joint and tendon pain. Physicians may use a state-of-the-art portable ultrasound machine to assist them in guiding the injections with extreme care to the hip and smaller joints in the hands and feet, ensuring proper delivery of medication and achieving better patient results and the possibility of less injections in the future.

Integrative Therapies

Galter LifeCenter, Chicago’s only certified medical fitness center, provides orthopedic patients with a variety of integrative therapy options, including acupuncture, clinical massage therapy and Watsu aquatic therapy.

Physical or occupational therapy, or a combination of the two, may be recommended by your orthopedic specialist to assist with everything from sports injury recovery to postoperative rehabilitation.

Specialized Orthopedic Surgery

When orthopedic surgery is necessary, we offer the latest and least invasive treatment options possible to help restore mobility and function while shortening recovery. Specialized surgical options offered by Swedish Hospital include:

Blue Distinction® Center+ for Hip and Knee Replacement

Swedish Hospital's Orthopedic Department earned a Blue Distinction from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois for hip and knee replacement. To earn this distinction, our orthopedic surgeons met nationally established selection criteria by demonstrating expertise in delivering quality specialty care, safely and effectively.

Direct Anterior Hip Replacement

This minimally invasive approach to hip replacement allows surgeons to operate from the front of the hip instead of the side or back to avoid important muscles and tissue and lead to a quicker recovery. Most patients are able to walk on their new hip immediately, minimizing many risks associated with immobility following surgery and return to a functional lifestyle sooner.

Benefits of the direct anterior hip replacement approach include a quicker recovery, less risk of dislocation and immediate full weight bearing.

Hip and Knee Replacement Revisions

When younger individuals undergo hip and knee replacements, it increases the risk of these implants wearing down and needing replacement with time. Fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons specialize in revising these replacements, a highly specialized procedure. Reasons for needing a revision on an existing joint replacement may include:

  • Instability of the joint
  • Significant injury to replaced joint, such as a fracture
  • Pain when moving the replaced joint
  • Swelling or redness near the replacement
  • Dislocation of the implant

Benefits of hip and knee replacement revisions includes a reduction or elimination of pain, restored mobility and the prevention of further complications due to unsound replacement.

Arthoplasty (Joint Replacement)

Complete joint replacements of the hip and knee, including minimally-invasive alternatives to traditional surgeries.

Hemiarthroplasty (Partial Hip Replacement)

Consists of removing the femoral head of the femur and replacing it with an artificial head made of metal. It is considered a partial join replacement as the socket is left intact.

Hand and Wrist Surgery

Repairs damage caused by trauma, carpal tunnel, arthritis and nerve compression.

Foot and Ankle Surgery

Treats fractures, trauma, tendon injuries, arthritis and other conditions.

Hip Fracture Repair

Depending on several factors, including the severity and location of the fracture, our surgeons offer a variety of highly specialized options to help you return to your prior quality of life faster and with greater success.

Cartilage Restoration Procedures

Joints are cleaned, realigned and stabilized as an alternative surgical intervention to joint replacement when possible.

Spine Surgery

Including minimally invasive procedures, offered by internationally renowned neurosurgeons at the Chicago Brain & Spine Institute on Swedish Hospital's campus.
