What is an obstetrician?

Obstetricians practice comprehensive gynecological care from adolescence to menopause. To practice as an obstetrician, individuals must graduate from medical school and complete four years of residency training on obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, ultrasonography and preventive care.

OBs specialize in assisting in high-risk pregnancy in which the mother has certain health problems, is younger than 17 or older than 35, is pregnant with more than one baby or is taking certain medications.

What is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM)?

To earn the title of CNM, a registered advanced practice nurse must continue their training in obstetrics and gynecology and pass a board examination by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). CNMs may specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and/or well-woman care, making them an essential resource for new mothers.
