Mammograms
Now offering 3-D ultrasound, an adjunct to mammogram for dense breasts!
Swedish Hospital offers 3-D mammograms to provide higher quality, more detailed images and scan results, which means more accurate diagnosis for our patients.
To improve detection rates in the 40% of women with dense breasts, Swedish Hospital also offers ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound) technology to be used in conjunction with 3-D mammography to achieve the most accurate diagnosis possible. It evaluates the entire breast compared to handheld ultrasound, which looks at one area of concern.

3-D Mammography
Mammograms are the best way to diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stages, according to American Cancer Society's recommended screening guidelines. All women should receive an annual mammogram screening after age 40 unless instructed otherwise by a medical professional.
What is 3-D Mammography
In 2-D mammograms, a camera positioned near the top of the X-ray machine takes a still image of the breast from above which radiologists then examine for problem areas, such as masses or nodules.
3-D mammograms take multiple sweeping images across the breast, allowing physicians to “roll through” the images to look under and behind dense breast tissue. 3-D mammography more accurately detects cysts, cancerous masses, lumps, breast calcifications (deposits of calcium in the breast) and other irregularities—which can reduce the number of follow-up exams necessary to achieve an accurate diagnosis.
Benefits of 3-D Mammography
3-D mammography is especially beneficial for women with dense breasts, women under the age of 50 and women who have a strong family history of breast cancer; however, 3-D mammograms can be valuable for any woman that is concerned about the health of her breasts, or who wants extra assurance.
- Detects 29% more breast cancer than traditional mammography
- Reduces the number of call backs due to false alarms by assisting radiologists in better interpreting abnormal mammograms
- Especially useful for younger women or women with fatty or dense breasts
What is the Cost of a Mammogram?
Our Women's Health Center accepts all insurance plans. If you do not have insurance coverage, costs may be covered by grants from A Silver Lining Foundation and the National Breast Cancer Foundation, when requirements are met.
New ABUS 3-D Ultrasound Technology
40% of women have dense breast tissue, which can lead to an increased risk for breast cancer due to difficulty detecting cancerous tissue. To improve detection rates in women with dense breasts, Swedish Hospital offers ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound) technology.
This procedure is used in addition to mammography for asymptomatic women with dense breast parenchyma for whom the mammography findings are normal or benign who have not had previous clinical breast intervention.
Benefits of ABUS Technology
- The diagnosis of additional mammographically occult breast cancers
- A 30% increase in sensitivity vs. mammography
