NorthShore, Swedish combined 260-year legacy delivering exceptional care across diverse urban and suburban neighborhoods

Evanston, Ill. – Swedish Hospital (formerly Swedish Covenant Health) is officially part of  NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore)—complementing the north suburban health provider with a fifth hospital, its first in eleven years and its first-ever hospital in Chicago. The transaction closed January 1, 2020, after receiving federal and state regulatory approvals last fall.

“Through our shared values, commitment to community and combined leadership and strengths, we are confident this extraordinary partnership will help us reach our goal of expanding access to quality patient care and developing best practices in care delivery to better meet the healthcare needs across our communities,” said NorthShore President and CEO J.P. Gallagher.

As part of the transaction, NorthShore will contribute technology, infrastructure and resources to benefit Swedish’s existing hospital, new ambulatory care facilities, installation of NorthShore’s award-winning comprehensive electronic medical record platform and wide-ranging community partnerships from violence prevention to reducing homelessness.

“We are very excited to come together as one dynamic organization,” said Swedish President and CEO Anthony Guaccio. “Our combination of nationally recognized physician leaders, researchers and clinical teams share an innovative spirit, challenging ourselves to take medicine to the next level of care.”

NorthShore and Swedish will maintain their respective and robust physician and ambulatory care networks but also work collaboratively to expand subspecialty care and services across a wider geography. Efforts are underway to bring NorthShore interventional cardiology and neurosurgery teams to Swedish, and also open orthopaedic immediate care services.

NorthShore will implement at Swedish its advanced predictive analytic technology and integrate genomics into everyday care to identify and reduce patient risk and optimize health and outcomes. Both will offer unparalleled access to community-based programs such as Swedish’s Mayora Rosenberg Women’s Health Center, NorthShore-supported Erie Evanston/Skokie Health Center and Immediate Care Centers.
“Swedish is a critical partner of our community—one who provides incredible services to our immediate constituents and many others beyond the 40th ward,” said Chicago Alderman Andre Vasquez. “It’s an incredible boost for our community to have the NorthShore health system on board, not only providing our community with access to more specialists, but also providing our community with stepped up commitments and resources where it counts, here in our own back yard.”
