Swedish Covenant Hospital Earns 'A' Leapfrog Safety Rating

We are pleased to announce that Swedish Covenant Hospital has been recognized once again for its dedication to patient safety by receiving an ‘A’ in the Spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The grade rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

“The national recognition of an ‘A’ Safety Grade is a visible sign of our daily commitment to providing the community with safe care and excellent patient outcomes,” said Bruce McNulty, Chief Medical Officer of Swedish Covenant Health. “Our entire Swedish Covenant Hospital family is proud to have received this recognition, because it’s all about what’s best for our patients.”

An A grade is a valuable indicator for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Grade is a standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit that works to drive improvements in patient safety.

This Spring’s Hospital Safety Grade used 28 evidence-based measures of patient safety to produce a single A, B, C, D or F grade, representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,600 U.S. hospitals received grades in May 2019, with fewer than one-third receiving an A grade.

Swedish Covenant Hospital is one of only five hospitals in the city of Chicago to receive an A grade in the May 2019 report.

The Hospital Safety Score makes its data analysis and methodology available to the public on its website. Patients can also review their hospital’s past safety performance alongside its current grade on the site, allowing them to determine which local hospitals have the best track record in patient safety and which have demonstrated consistent improvement.
