Swedish Covenant Hospital was recently recognized by the City of Chicago for the hospital’s efforts to benchmark energy performance and maximize energy efficiency. The hospital appeared as a featured building in the 2015 Chicago Energy Benchmarking Report, as well as appearing visually in Sustainable Chicago’s 2012-2015 Highlights & Look Ahead publication.
The recognition was prompted by the extensive retro-commissioning the campus underwent since 2009 to achieve energy efficiency improvements. During this time, Swedish Covenant Hospital replaced chillers with new, energy efficient models; the Foster Medical Pavilion, an LEED Gold Building, was opened and the Mayora Rosenberg Women’s Health Center and the basement of the Professional Plaza were built out with energy efficient lighting and building controls.
Swedish Covenant Hospital was named a featured building in recognition of its emphasis on energy-conscious design and operations. The results of these advancements speak for themselves: the hospital has achieved a 10% energy reduction since 2009 which translates into $190,000 per year saved on energy consumption.
“We are proud to be chosen by the City of Chicago as a featured building in their energy and sustainable focused publications,” said Vice President of Facilities Saliba Kokaly. “This recognition honors our strong commitment to energy conservation and continuous effort to benchmark energy performance and maximize energy efficiency.”
The Chicago Energy Benchmarking Report is a part of the Chicago City Council’s Building Energy Use Benchmarking Ordinance. Founded in 2013, the ordinance requires all residential, institutional and commercial buildings greater than 50,000 square feet to track whole-building energy use on a monthly basis, annually report to the Chicago City Council and verify the accuracy of this data every three years.
Swedish Covenant Hospital also recently received the Energy to Care Award from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) and has received rebates from ComEd and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF).
