Swedish Covenant Hospital has earned Magnet Recognition® for nursing excellence for the second time since first receiving the distinction in May 2010. Magnet Recognition is given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practice. Swedish Covenant Hospital is one of only 38 Magnet-recognized hospitals in Illinois and one of only six hospitals in Chicago to receive the distinction.

Magnet recognition has become the gold standard for outstanding nursing care and a primary national ranking criterion for inpatient care quality. To achieve Magnet recognition, hospitals must complete a rigorous application process, demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence of superior patient care and outcomes as required by the ANCC. If that documentation passes muster, Magnet officials conduct a thorough on-site visit. Hospitals must reapply for magnet recognition every four years, providing further documentation of how they have sustained and improved on the Magnet concepts, performance and quality measures for which they were first recognized. Magnet designation has been linked to better patient satisfaction, lower 30-day mortality rates and higher job satisfaction among nurses.

“Being recognized as a Magnet facility for the second time is an outstanding achievement for Swedish Covenant Hospital,” said Swedish Covenant Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Donofrio. “I’d like to recognize and congratulate every nurse at Swedish Covenant Hospital as each and every one deserves deep respect and admiration for their teamwork, their ongoing commitment to quality and most of all, for putting our patients at the center of all they do.”
