CHICAGO – In recognition of close collaboration with Land of Lincoln Health (LLH), the state’s first and only consumer-oriented and -operated health insurance plan, the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC) presented Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago’s leading independent teaching hospital, with the Insurance Marketplace Disrupter Award this afternoon. The award was presented to leading Chicago area hospitals and health systems that worked with LLH to redefine how insurers and providers can work together to offer innovative health insurance options to their patient populations.

Swedish Covenant Hospital President and CEO Mark Newton accepted the award at MCHC’s 61st Annual Luncheon on behalf of the hospital. “The greatest problem affecting our community is access to care,” says Newton. “Our partnership with Land of Lincoln Health has allowed us to offer affordable health insurance options which increase access and connect patients to quality care. We are proud to be recognized by the MCHC as a Marketplace Disrupter, and we will continue to search for new solutions that improve the lives of our patients.”

MCHC recognized several leading institutions by presenting awards to hospitals and health systems that have developed particularly innovative solutions for enhancing delivery of care in the metropolitan Chicago region. Swedish Covenant Hospital was one such recipient, for its collaboration with LLH to offer patients the Swedish Covenant- Land of Lincoln Health insurance plans.

With this plan, patients can see Swedish Covenant Hospital’s expert providers for the lowest copays, coinsurance and out-of-pocket costs, while retaining access to LLH’s broad, nationwide network of providers. This ultimately keeps costs down for consumers while empowering them to see providers at a facility they already know and trust.

“Swedish Covenant Hospital has shown an unwavering commitment to the communities they serve through their collaboration with LLH to offer this innovative, transparent health insurance option,” said Dan Yunker, CEO, LLH, and President and CEO, MCHC. “For too long, Illinois consumers lacked real options for high-quality, cost-effective health insurance coverage. Swedish Covenant Hospital’s work with LLH has absolutely disrupted that dynamic and has breathed fresh air into a market that hadn’t seen true innovation in decades.”

MCHC’s Annual Luncheon brings the region’s health care leaders and their employees together in an informal setting to recognize their respective achievements and discuss innovation, collaboration and transformation within the Chicago area health care industry. The luncheon recognizes health care organizations and exemplar employees in appreciation of the vital roles they play in caring for the communities they serve.
