What are prenatal visits like with you?
When a woman comes to see me for prenatal care, I let her guide the visit and direct me to what she’s concerned about or needs to focus on, whether that is weight gain, cramping, or back pain. I try to be very patient-centered and patient-driven, and I provide as much information as I can at each visit. Even if a woman is beginning her fourth pregnancy and doesn’t have any questions, for instance, I try to give her some interesting factoids or “brain teasers” so she gets as much out of our visits as possible.
How do you approach the birth process?
I find that helping a woman feel prepared for childbirth gives her a better sense of control during labor. She should feel comfortable in her environment and have the freedom and confidence to choose the positions she finds most comfortable, move around, and do what comes naturally. Some women prefer distraction and some like focus and meditation, so I just try to help women achieve the birth experience that feels right to them.
Birth in this country has become very medicalized, and I think we sometimes forget that it is a natural process and an amazing experience, and it should be treated as such. Birth plans can always change in the case of complications, but I want my patients to trust me to intervene only when it’s necessary for their safety.
Do you work with doulas?
Absolutely. I encourage women to use doulas to support them in anything they need. And from the midwifery standpoint, doulas help keep me in touch with the birth experience on a deeper level than the procedure of delivery. In fact, I spent two years as a doula and loved the work.
How did you decide to become a midwife?
I first realized I wanted to care for women during pregnancy and labor when I was in college at UC Davis in Northern California. I was on track to become a veterinarian when I joined a volunteer doula program in the town. I had worked with animal births, but when I witnessed that first human birth, I fell in love. Seeing a woman have that kind of power opened up a whole new world for me. I changed my major, changed my life plan, and never looked back.
Where are you from and what do you like to do in your spare time?
Although I spent most of my youth in California, I traveled all around the world with my family growing up. I was born in New Jersey, but spent three years in Mexico and three years in Chile. I still love to travel. I’m also very big into cooking, and I do yoga.
