What is your practice philosophy?
In each visit with a client, I try to find a way to empower her. And of course, birth offers a significant opportunity for empowerment. I think that’s why I enjoy the work as much as I do. Women choose to work with us during pregnancy because we provide a client-centered approach. Our care is patient, personal, and non-interventional. We are constantly having conversations, meetings, and reviewing research to stay connected with the latest evidence-based medicine.
During prenatal care as well as well-woman care, I really enjoy providing client education. If I had a different career, I would probably be a teacher: I love answering questions and helping people learn new things.
How do you help women have a positive birth experience?
I cater as much as possible to my clients’ birth plans and requests during labor, whether to eat and drink, push in the positions that are comfortable for them, or to get in the tub. Fortunately, we have many birthing tools at Swedish, including laboring tubs, birth balls, and squat bars.
Do you work with adolescents and young adults?
Yes, I very much enjoy working with teens to provide counseling on birth control and safe sex. In adolescence, having a safe, private space is very important. Teens need to first establish a relationship with a provider and then invite in their support system (friends and family) rather than assuming that the support system has to be there in the exam room right off the bat. I work hard to listen to teens and understand their comfort level in order to establish a rapport and provide the right kind of care.
How did you decide to become a midwife?
My dad was a physician, and I always knew I was interested in going into medicine to care for women. However, it wasn’t until college that I took psychology classes and learned that I also loved working with the mind and spirit. After doing an Americorp internship in Chicago working with high-risk women who were pregnant or had just had their babies, I realized that midwifery could be the marriage of my comfort with medicine and my love for the mind and the spirit.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like to spend time at the dog beach with my Lab mix. I also rollerblade, and last year I did my first rollerblading marathon! I also knit, I make jewelry, and I love cooking.
