Cytopathology
Cytopathology is the study of the structure and composition of an individual cell and how it coexists within the specific tissue sect and/or organ. Changes and interactions are analyzed to determine the evidence of non-neoplastic, benign neoplasia or malignant neoplastic disease. The Swedish Hospital Cytopathology Laboratory provides comprehensive gynecologic and non-gynecologic (exfoliative and aspiration) cytology services.
About Us
The Cytopathology Laboratory includes three board-certified cytopathologists, a certified cytotechnologist and a specialist in cytotechnology. As cytology application and practice have evolved, Swedish Hospital has adapted to the emergence of new collection and/or preparation techniques to enhance diagnostic sensitivity and specificity.
Cytopathologists work collaboratively with radiologists to determine the status of neoplastic tumors by assisting in collection and preparation of specimens obtained using image guidance: ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopic imaging and during endoscopic ultrasound techniques, providing near-immediate results.
Through this collaboration, patients may undergo a less invasive and more affordable procedure than exploratory surgeries and clinicians will have a reduced turn-around-time for test results and diagnoses. It also allows medical professionals to immediately determine whether there is a need to perform ancillary such as immunohistochemistry, molecular and microbiology studies on submitted specimens.
