Stroke Awareness

Our program is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). This designation means we meet or exceed high standards for stroke care. From emergency to transitional care, we are with you every step of the way.

The best stroke treatment includes receiving clot-busting medications within three hours of your first symptoms. At Swedish Hospital, we consistently provide that treatment within one hour.

What Is Stroke?

Stroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. The most common form of stroke happens when a blood clot gets stuck in a blood vessel. Getting prompt treatment increases your chances of survival and can improve your quality of life following recovery.

In the event of a stroke, every second counts, so it’s important to know the warning signs. That’s why we participate in local health fairs to raise stroke awareness. We help you learn about the signs and symptoms of stroke and what to do if you experience them. Doing so can help you get the care you need faster, when it’s likely to be more effective. Common Stroke Symptoms

Stroke affects the brain in different ways and can cause a range of symptoms. You should seek medical help if symptoms come on suddenly.

Common stroke symptoms include:

  • Weakness in your face, arm or leg, usually on one side of your body
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty seeing, including double or blurry vision
  • Problems with balance and coordination, including dizziness and trouble walking

Unusual Stroke Symptoms

Some people experience less common stroke symptoms. In fact, women experience stroke differently from men and are more likely to experience unusual symptoms.

Unusual stroke symptoms include:

  • Losing consciousness (fainting)
  • Sudden, uncomfortable hiccups
  • Seizure, which happens when there is a burst of electrical activity in the brain
  • Sudden change in behavior, such as feeling scared or angry for no apparent reason

What to Do If You Experience Stroke-Like Symptoms

Here are four steps to remember if you or a loved one is experiencing stroke-like symptoms:

    1. Dial 911 Immediately

    2. Wait for Help to Arrive

Stay where you are, even if symptoms seem mild enough that you think you can drive to the hospital.

    3. Gather Important Information

If possible, write down the symptoms you are experiencing as well as when you first noticed them.

    4. Do Not Eat or Drink

Stroke can affect your ability to swallow. Try not to eat or drink anything until you receive a stroke evaluation.
