Swedish Covenant Hospital midwives specialize in providing comprehensive, holistic care and treatment for women with normal or low-risk pregnancies. Our practice is focused on ensuring that you have access to the best, safest treatments possible for your health, and the health of your baby.
It is a practice policy to refer patients with “high-risk” pregnancies to Swedish Covenant Hospital’s dedicated team of board-certified obstetricians for their primary care during pregnancy. Women who have a pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) greater than 40 are considered to be high-risk. According to a 2013 committee opinion published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women who are obese have a heightened risk of pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, cesarean delivery, gestational diabetes and stillbirth delivery.
Women who have a BMI over 40, pre-existing diabetes, active hyperthyroidism, chronic hypertension or other risk factors will be referred to a specialist that can provide them with the appropriate monitoring and treatment. Please note that this policy only pertains to care during pregnancy and childbirth—not for our general women’s health services.
By putting your safety first, we can help provide the best care for you and your family. For more information about how to calculate your BMI, please visit the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institution website
