Osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss happens with no symptoms.
Women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, but many don’t know they have it until they break a bone. In fact, one in two women over age 50 is likely to break a bone because of this disease. Fortunately, you can take steps to protect yourself with a simple test.
Osteoporosis is preventable. At Swedish Covenant Hospital, we offer a simple, non-invasive screening called a DEXA bone density test. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to measure the bone density in the hip and spine. The results are sent to your primary care physician to determine treatment, if necessary.
What puts you at risk?
You may be at risk for osteoporosis if you:
- Have a family history of osteoporosis
- Have an inactive lifestyle
- Are age 50 or older
- Have a smaller bone structure
- Smoke
