- Bring a list of the dates and locations of all earlier imaging exams and breast biopsies that you have had. This allows the radiologist to compare this year's findings to your previous tests.
- Avoid caffeine the week before your mammogram, as it has a tendency to make women's breasts tender and lumpy. Common sources of caffeine include coffee, tea, chocolate, soda and some over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Schedule your exam when your breasts are the least tender. Your screening will be more comfortable if you avoid the week before your menstrual period.
- Avoid using deodorant, talcum powder, perfumes, lotions and oils on the day of your exam. These products can leave behind a residue which can be picked up on x-ray, interfering with the results.
- Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever before coming in for your screening. This can help reduce pain for many people. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any medications.
- Wear a two-piece outfit with a blouse or sweater to your appointment. While it won't affect the results, it may make changing a little easier.
