An Introduction to Swedish Hospital

Swedish Hospital is part of Endeavor Health, a Chicagoland based integrated health system driven by our mission to help everyone in our communities be their best.

Swedish Hospital was founded in 1886 by the Evangelical Covenant Church, with a mission to care for the whole person—biological, psychological, social and spiritual. Now a comprehensive health system, Swedish Hospital serves the medical needs of Chicago's north and northwest sides through a wide range of health and wellness services.
The hospital is known for its high-quality nursing, convenient location and personal atmosphere. More than 500 physicians and advanced practice providers, 3,000 employees and 150 volunteers are committed to serving the community’s health care needs.

The medical staff uses advanced technology and procedures to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical services, which include:

  • Adolescent Community Clinics
  • Advanced Pediatrics - Center of Excellence
  • Cardiology - Center of Excellence
  • Community and Home Health Services
  • Critical Care
  • Emergency Treatment
  • Inpatient and Outpatient Psychiatric Services

Residents and students are exposed to a culture-rich environment, diversity of belief systems and a wide range of pathological conditions. The blend of an academic and community provides our graduates with the skills and compassion necessary to excel in primary or specialty medical careers.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion

Swedish Graduate Medical Education is committed to promoting and championing a diverse and inclusive community of students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff. We believe that every person is entitled to high quality healthcare, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexual orientation, ability, wealth, religion, nationality, or any other facet of their identity. We acknowledge that the institution of medicine in the United States has a long history of failing to serve all people equitably, that these inequitable practices continue to this day, and that our institution is not immune. Through excellence in teaching, learning, community engagement, and leadership, we are dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving the health and well-being of the population we serve.

A Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Task Force was created by champions of each program to address racism, sexism, and all other forms of bias and discrimination in our residency programs through the following methods:

  • Deconstructing social determinants of health, recognizing injustices, and standing in solidarity with marginalized groups in our society
  • Setting specific recruitment goals to increase the diversity of backgrounds and identities represented in our residents and faculty
  • Developing a formal curriculum on health equity and social determinants of health, so that all our residents graduate with the skills to recognize and address barriers to health experienced by the patients and communities they serve
  • Creating a culture of open conversation, humility, and self-reflection that facilitates ongoing progress in this work
