Childbirth: Delivering with nurse-midwives
Our nurse-midwives on staff offer unique, personalized care to every woman they work with, and they aim to give you a positive and empowering experience.
If you choose to deliver with Board-Certified Nurse-midwives at Swedish Covenant Hospital, you will experience the following expert services:
BEFORE DELIVERY
Longer appointment times will give you plenty of time to ask any questions you may have. |
Education: Nurse-midwives strive to educate and empower you by acting as a resource for health information and counseling. They want you to feel well-informed about every aspect of your pregnancy. |
Group Practice: Throughout your pregnancy, you will meet every nurse-midwife in the practice so that no matter which nurse-midwife is on-call to help you when the big day comes, you will already have a comfortable, established relationship with her. |
Care during pregnancy: Your nurse-midwife will be with you every step of the way, before and after your delivery. |
DURING DELIVERY
Care during childbirth: Your nurse-midwife will stay by your side during the labor process, supporting you and helping you with breathing and positioning (walking.) |
Non-interventive labor and delivery: Nurse-midwives support the natural process of labor and delivery. If interventions are deemed necessary, your nurse-midwife will make sure to discuss all options with you. |
Labor and delivery with pain medication: Nurse-midwives focus on making your birth experience exactly how you want it. If you want medication or an epidural, your nurse-midwife has the authority to write prescriptions and will be glad to offer them. |
Hydrotherapy: Each room has a Jacuzzi for hydrotherapy, which is a technique used to help ease your labor pains. |
Alternatives to traditional childbirth: Nurse-midwives are comfortable supporting your pushing efforts and delivering your baby in alternative positions, such as squatting, hands and knees or on the birth stool. |
Breastfeeding support: Your nurse-midwife will help initiate breastfeeding and will not leave you until you feel that you have bonded with your baby. |

VISIT EXPERIENCE
Nurse-midwives use their medical education and expertise, along with compassion and care, to answer all of your questions about women's health issues — including birth control, family planning, common infections and more.
By offering longer appointment times, nurse-midwives give you plenty of time to discuss whatever topics and concerns you may have.
Teaching is an important aspect of each visit because nurse-midwives want to provide you with enough information to get you involved as an active participant in your health care. For example, the nurse-midwife will discuss how to maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise in order to prevent disease in the future.
