Meet the Psychologists

SUNG CHO, PsyD

Dr. Cho is a recent addition to the Swedish Covenant Hospital staff and is the supervisor of Psychological Services. He earned his degrees from the University of Notre Dame and the George Washington University. After being awarded his doctoral degree in clinical psychology, he completed his internship at Miami Children's Hospital and completed his fellowship at the Allendale Association. Dr. Cho's training focused on working with children and adolescents with mental and physical health problems. Previously, Dr. Cho was the director of Behavioral Health at PrimeCare Community Health, a federally qualified health center in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, where he successfully initiated a primary care behavioral health system to address the numerous unmet behavioral health needs in the community. He was brought on as the new supervisor of Health Psychology Services. He holds Adjunct Faculty status at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. STEVE KVAAL, PhD

Dr. Kvaal has more than 16 years of clinical experience. After earning his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Ohio University, he completed his internship, postdoctoral fellowship, and clinical fellowship at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center. During his training, Dr. Kvaal worked closely with transplant physicians and bariatric surgeons to determine psychological readiness for surgery and with anesthesiologists to provide collaborative, interdisciplinary treatment of a range of chronic pain problems and with dentists and physical therapists to provide interdisciplinary treatment of facial pain. Dr. Kvaal moved to Chicago in 1996 to become the director of training for the Department of Psychology at Roosevelt University. He was subsequently named the director of the Doctoral Program at Roosevelt. He has published in peer reviewed journals. As part of the Swedish Covenant Hospital medical staff, Dr. Kvaal brings an expertise in clinical and health psychology with specialization in the evaluation and treatment of pain using empirically and evidence-based treatment approaches. DOROTA ERDMAN, PsyD

Dr. Erdman has been with Swedish Covenant Hospital's Psychological Services for more than 10 years. She earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. She is multilingual in Russian, Polish and English. Dr. Erdman held teaching positions at Roosevelt, Northwestern, and Purdue Universities. Dr. Erdman currently serves as the health psychology liaison to the Swedish Covenant Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation Services. In this role, she is in charge of coordinating all behavioral health needs and communicating those needs to the rehabilitation physicians and staff. In addition to treating general adult psychopathology, Dr. Erdman has specific training in geropsychology and applied this through her work at the Council for Jewish Elderly. Also, she has an interest in postpartum/perinatal and women's issues.

FREDERICK BYLSMA, PhD

Dr. Bylsma, another new addition to Psychological Services, has more than 20 years of experience as a neuropsychologist. He earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Ottawa. Prior to joining us, he held teaching and clinical positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and University of Chicago's Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Bylsma has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals, authored numerous book chapters, and presented at conferences on various topics in Neuropsychology. Dr. Bylsma will be providing neuropsychological evaluation in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Services and will be available to provide outpatient neuropsychological evaluations to adults with acquired brain injuries (stroke, traumatic brain injuries, etc.), neurological disease (Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, etc.), known suspects of dementia, and the cognitive consequences of serious medical illness. KATHERINE HANSON, PhD

Dr. Hanson is a new addition to Psychological Services and comes to us with 10 years of clinical experience. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia and completed a multidisciplinary internship with the Missouri Behavioral Health Sciences Consortium. Dr. Hanson completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship at Rush University Medical Center with a concentration in geriatrics and rehabilitation and was later promoted to the position of Assistant Professor and taught in their medical school. More recently, she has focused on issues related to women's health including, postpartum depression and anxiety, fertility, menopause, and grief and bereavement as they relate to miscarriage and prenatal/perinatal loss. In addition to treating adults with general mental health concerns, she also has considerable experience working with patients coping with a variety of health issues including Multiple Sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and cancer.
