Swedish Covenant Hospital is fully committed to treating prostate cancer and sponsors free screenings and lectures to prevent and detect this second most common form of cancer in men and the third leading cause of cancer deaths (according to Altruis Biomedical Network).
Following a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer-prevention incorporates basic healthy habits: eating fruits and vegetables, exercising, reducing alcohol intake and not smoking.
Preventing prostate cancer also emphasizes restricting daily caloric intake with consideration to activity level and body mass. Early identification remains the best way to combat prostate cancer.
Screening Is Essential
The American Cancer Society recommends that annual prostate cancer screenings begin at age 50. This should include:
Men in high risk groups, such as African American men or men who have a close family history of prostate cancer, should begin screenings at age 45. It is also recommended that men age 45 have a baseline PSA.
Swedish Covenant Hospital frequently sponsors free prostate cancer screenings and lectures, particularly during September, Prostate Awareness Month. The urologists on staff donate their time to perform these screenings, discuss results and give prostate-prevention lectures.
