Whether you have been recently diagnosed with cancer or have transitioned into long-term survivorship, it’s important to have access to the integrated cancer services you need to help you achieve your personal health and wellness goals. Integrated Cancer Care at Swedish Hospital combines the latest treatments, wellness programming, counseling and therapeutic approaches to support you on your health care journey.

Integrated Cancer Care at Swedish Hospital was initiated with grant support from the Coleman Foundation and is sustained through philanthropic gifts through Swedish Hospital Foundation

Nutrition Services

Nutritional assessment and counseling for a variety of nutritional and dietary topics related to cancer treatment and recovery is available to cancer patients at Swedish Hospital. Topics include: 

  • Weight loss or gain
  • Poor appetite
  • Taste changes
  • Healthy eating and diet planning
  • Dry mouth
  • Mouth sores
  • Gastrointestinal distress
  • Chewing/swallowing difficulties
  • Supplement recommendations
  • Counseling for diabetes and other pre-existing conditions
  • Disease-specific education and support

Fitness and Wellness Services

    Membership and Fitness Programming at Galter LifeCenter

    Individualized exercise and fitness programming is available to provide support and strength to patients in all stages of their cancer journey, with hand-tailored fitness and wellness plans designed for each patient’s unique diagnosis.

    Breast Cancer Fitness Support Group

    The Breast Cancer Fitness Support Group is an eight-week small group program for breast cancer survivors held at Galter LifeCenter. The program includes group exercise, nutrition counseling and overall survivorship support at no cost, thanks to funding provided by Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen®

    Included in Weekly Group Sessions

    • Group exercise sessions facilitated by a certified personal trainer and tailored to the abilities of participants
    • Nutrition education by a certified dietitian
    • Survivorship support provided by a patient navigator

Emotional Support Services

    Cancer Counseling Through Cancer Wellness Center

    Cancer counseling services are available for free to cancer patients through a partnership with Cancer Wellness Center. Cancer patients and their loved ones are taught evidence-based coping strategies and practical suggestions to help improve quality of life and normalize the emotions and issues raised by a cancer diagnosis.

    Monday appointments are available. Please call 773-878-8200, ext. 3010 and leave a message. The counselor will call you back to schedule an appointment.

    Events and Groups

    Integrated Cancer Care at Swedish Hospital offers cancer patients access to a variety of weekly support group’s held on campus in addition to regular, unique events scheduled monthly.

      Available Groups and Events

    • Artist-in-Residence Program (including a Weekly Art Group)
    • Weekly Meditation Group
    • Monthly Nutrition Group
    • Various events held throughout the year

    Palliative Care Services

    Palliative care can provide patients and their families with comfort and support when used with all types of treatment, including curative. Many people think palliative care means “giving up,” but a growing number of medical providers and patients are recognizing the many ways it can benefit all types of patients and loved ones affected by serious illness. 

    Uses of Palliative Care

    • Treatment of physical, emotional, and spiritual discomfort, symptoms and stress of cancer diagnosis and treatment
    • Assistance with advance care planning
    • Providing additional support at points of transition in care
    • Providing patients and their families with access to individual, couples or family short-term counseling and bereavement services

Integrative Medicine          

    Integrative Therapies

    Integrated Cancer Care at Swedish Hospital is focused on treating the whole person: body, mind and spirit. For the best, most effective healing experience, your personalized care plan may include the incorporation of complementary treatments such as supplements and integrative therapies including massage, acupuncture and water shiatsu.  

    Integrative therapies are made possible through close collaboration with medical specialists at Galter LifeCenter, Chicago’s only certified medical fitness center.

Oncology Navigation Services

Experienced patient navigators are here to guide you, your family and your caregivers through the health care system from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. Newly diagnosed patients and those in treatment meet with the Integrated Cancer Care navigator as part of the treatment planning process.

The navigator provides an overview of survivorship services and completes a series of screenings to identify needs and the survivorship services of greatest value to the patient.  Components of navigation services include:

  • Psychosocial assessment
  • Information and referral
  • Care coordination
  • Distress assessment
  • Survivorship care planning
  • Crisis intervention
  • Advanced care planning
  • Education
