Volunteer News

This month we would like to highlight one of our many volunteers who truly puts her heart into volunteering.

Born and raised just a few blocks from Swedish Covenant Hospital, Carolyn Mella, R.N., has always felt a connection with, and a love for, the surrounding community. She retired from nursing in 1994 to care for her husband who later passed away. Such misfortune would discourage many people, but Carolyn, spurred by the encouragement she received from those closest to her, was inspired to become a volunteer in the emergency department.

When asked about her experience as a volunteer Carolyn says, "I volunteered for the same reason I became a nurse - to help others. There is not a day I don't feel that I really enjoy this."

As an R.N., Carolyn understands the operations and needs of the nurses within the emergency department. However, she believes the little things she is able to do for patients are what seem to matter most. "Little things like getting a blanket for someone, or asking if they need anything really make a difference. Everyone is very appreciative to have someone there to help or listen to them."
