How to Become a Volunteer

*Please note that the process to become a volunteer takes an average of 4 to 6 weeks.

Once your application has been submitted and reviewed by the director of volunteer resources you will be asked to an interview. If you are accepted as a volunteer your next step to becoming a volunteer will be to attend orientation, health screenings and on-the-job training.

Orientation

Attendance at General Hospital Orientation is mandatory. Information unique to Swedish Covenant Hospital (such as policies and procedures) are presented, and participants have the opportunity to ask questions. This information is necessary to provide and maintain a safe environment for our patients, volunteers, visitors and staff.

Training

On-the-job training is provided by the appropriate staff members and/or experienced volunteer. Volunteers are required to adhere to a written volunteer job description for the area to which they have been assigned.

Volunteer Placement

Your personal goals and desires will be taken into account when determining your volunteer assignment. While every effort is made to accommodate the volunteer, the priority is to assist a department of the Hospital in meeting its goals and objectives. Volunteers do not replace paid staff.

Evaluation

An annual evaluation is completed for long-term volunteers (volunteers serving for a year or longer). For short-term volunteers, such as students fulfilling the minimum 60 hour requirement, the first few weeks are considered a mutual evaluation period. During this time, either the volunteer or the department may determine that the placement is not appropriate.

Annual Requirement

Each year, long-term volunteers are required to complete an annual review, along with an annual TB screening.
