Magnet Force 14: Professional Development

The nurses who care for you at Swedish Covenant Hospital excel because our talents are nurtured, and we are given room to grow. Our hospital's commitment to our formal education and our personal and professional development means your wellness is in the best of hands.

Our management supports us with a wide range of career development services to help us develop professionally on the job, find areas of specialty, and move forward with our nursing careers. Swedish Covenant offers us tuition reimbursement and board-certified refresher courses on campus, and we are constantly refreshing our knowledge of new medicines and technologies, and adopting better methods of care.

When we first begin our careers at Swedish Covenant, nurses of every kind are welcomed and informed by our nursing orientation, which helps us adopt the methods and strategies we use to help you heal. As we progress, we keep our knowledge of emerging medical issues updated at frequent in-service training.

Continuing Nurse Education is a state-regulated requirement through which we maintain our licensure, and is a crucial part of our nursing program. And since we believe in encouraging nurses to learn skills in new areas, all continuing orientations on every unit are open to all other departments.

And we feel valued - as nurses achieve professional certifications, we are recognized by performance appraisals, in special sections of our Web site, our Nurses Week recognition ceremony, and in special mentions in professional publications.

We also benefit from the partnership between Swedish Covenant and the Galter LifeCenter, a full-service health and workout facility which offers fitness and wellness programs for all ages. It is staffed by a multi-lingual team including credentialed health and fitness professionals and physical therapists who encourage us to pursue fitness from a holistic perspective.

Then there's LifeWORKS, a close collaboration among several of our departments including Human Resources, Employee Health Services, and the Galter LifeCenter. LifeWORKS is a practical part of Swedish Covenant's vision to maintain physical, emotional and spiritual well being in all areas of our lives, and strike a healthy balance between our work life and home life.

What sorts of inspirational stories emerge in a hospital where human resources and financial resources ensure that all employees continually learn, improve, and find new ways to use their talents for healing? Success stories like that of Delores Harold, who started as a housekeeper, before becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, a Registered Nurse, and now board-certified in geriatrics. Then there's Laura Rogers, who went from weekend staff member to staff nurse to nurse manager, all the way to her current administrative role as Director of Nursing.
