Magnet Force 11: Nurses as Teachers

Nurses are natural teachers. Teaching patients and their families about medication, plans of care, and everything they need to know to make their Swedish Covenant experience the best it can be is part of our daily work. And our commitment to formal education, both within our own walls and in colleges and universities around Chicago, helps us maintain our high standards of professionalism and dedication to healing.

We teach each other through peer review, orientation, nurse residency, and precepting programs at every level where nurses mentor and support each other. Preceptors help preserve Swedish Covenant's excellent standards of care by devoting extra hours of work and training to help in the professional development of nurses at every level of experience, and in every area of nursing expertise.

Our patient education program meets the diverse needs of our patients every step of the way. You're a well-informed partner in your health care plan because the valuable input of nurses shapes the design of everything from the informative health care brochures to the care notes you depend on. Our Patient Education Committee is run by a nurse, and three others work alongside her in the patient education department.

We provide interpretive services to help sidestep any language barriers and make sure you have all the information you need to make the best of the care we give you. Our nurses provide care notes to outgoing patients with carefully tailored health care instructions in any one of 22 languages, because our staff itself reflects the tapestry of cultures and languages that enrich our community. The community we serve is multicultural and diverse, and so are we.

We teach and support our community through outreach programs like health fairs, and as instructors at nearby universities. Several of our best and brightest nurses are shaping the newest generation of nurses as instructors at North Park University and Loyola University. Some teach on the theoretical side of health care, and others focus on the more on practical clinical instruction, but all of them bring insights from work into the classroom, and insights from the fresh perspective of young students back to work.

In return, Chicago's finest universities and colleges place their nursing students at Swedish Covenant Hospital to enhance their classroom learning with solid experience. Students from all over Chicago fulfill their academic obligations to clinical training by learning from the excellent examples of Swedish Covenant nurses and teachers.

We also provide a robust learning environment for nursing assistant students at Truman College who gain confidence in their abilities with hands-on and shadowing experiences. Our students are a broad range of dedicated people who learn and grow professionally in every part of Swedish Covenant. But they all inspire us with their enthusiasm and their fresh perspective. The spirit of learning and teaching enriches our devotion to your health every single day.
